SRI Consulting Publishes Chemical Management Services Report

The Rise of Business Segment Keeps Chemical Costs Down

MENLO PARK, CA. July 9, 2008 — Chemicals, either as formulations or as specific molecules, are used by a variety of manufacturing and service industries. Hardly anything is made without chemical products, and the cost of managing chemicals from purchase to disposal can turn out to be a multiple of their original purchase price. Today, SRI Consulting (SRIC) published its Chemical Management Services (CMS) report that examines the development of this business segment over the last decade and profiles major players including distributors, software suppliers, environmental health and safety consultants and full service manufacturers.

Many factors contribute to the growth of this important business segment. Among them are increased cost of chemicals, as well as the complexity of regulations for use and disposal. CMS providers offer cradle to grave management of chemicals and chemical formulations for companies that want to keep costs down and want to reduce the burden of managing chemical purchases.

Robert Davenport, Director of SRIC’s Safe & Sustainable Chemicals series, commented, "Certain types of chemical users will benefit from CMS more than others. Typically these are users of small to medium amounts of chemicals, but not so small that they do not present opportunities for significant cost savings." Mr. Davenport added, “The threshold where CMS begins to pay for itself is often quoted as purchases of over $1 million, but this varies by industry, company, and the focus or capabilities of the provider.”

SRIC’s Chemical Management Services report studies the chemical industry and examines which sectors are most amenable to CMS. Major suppliers of CMS are identified, and additional providers may come from the ranks of distributors that add such functions as research and development, better customer service, and expanded information technology capabilities. Several major consuming markets for CMS are also analyzed in detail.
